thursday

I didn't go to practice on Monday because Maverick scratched his cornea at school and I played Nursemaid Mom instead (mostly reading Encyclopedia Brown stories).    I'm not really looking forward to tonight, as we are practicing at the no A/C sports arena and it's supposed to be like 90 degrees this evening.

yay for scrimmaging

our team had its first scrimmage against an away team yesterday - even though we lost, we did really, really, really well and I am very proud of my teammates!

(then there was the part where I ended up in the rotation of jammers, and two of the jams I was in had to go the full two minutes, and by the end I was very dead.)

cranking forever onward

I hate Sunday practices.  We spent most of the time working with Apolo Anton OhHELLno and I just end up in tears by the end.  All these stupid strength training stuff that aggravates whatever minor injury I happen to have (remember how I screwed up my ankle a while back? yeah), and then sometimes we have to hop.

HOPPING AFTER YOU'VE GIVEN BIRTH FUCKING SUCKS.

But then Monday practices, with my team, are wonderful and cool and awesome.

so

Monday was our first scrimmage against the other home team.  We've got some work to do.

Our team is a vast variety of skaters - some who have really shone since Day 1, some who have really stepped up to the plate in a major way, some who are not nearly as good as they think they are.

So I went over to Derby News Network to look at various bout scores. Some of them are downright fascinating.  112 to 5?  114 to 2?  125 to 10?  191 to 23?  241 to 26? 284 to 33?  It reminds me of when we played in Kitchener last season - the final score was 162 them, 40 us.  By the end we were like "okay, anyone want to jam?  Go for it!" (I did, twice, and as a result, 6 of those 40 points were scored by yours truly.)

and.....decompress.

I always turn into a complete lunatic on bout day.  Every single bump in the road turns into an OMFG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE disaster of monumental proportions.

(That, and everyone has a favor to ask of me. Which is fine for the first or second person but by the time I get to the twelfth person asking if she can set a ticket aside at the box office for a friend to pick up I am exhaling fire down their necks.)

The bout, of course, was fantastic.  Our team lost BY TWO POINTS.  Gaa.  (I couldn't watch because I was in the box office, but I could hear the screaming and I could see the scoreboard through the window.)

So next time, June 12, it's us. Whee!

work is never done

right before every bout I write up my list of stuff I have to do and bring.  Here it is, so far:
  • buy receipt rolls for the cash registers
  • buy a roll of tickets for the 50/50 raffle because I have no idea where the roll we had last year is
  • buy AA batteries for the cash registers
  • buy an extension cord for the cash registers because I don't know where the outlet is at the sports complex there's no outlet close enough to where the merch will be
  •  bring the cash drawers on Saturday (currently in the trunk of my car)
  • bring the bill counter on Saturday (currently in my attic the dining room)
  • pick up the starter change and bill straps from the bank on Saturday morning (dammit I forgot! need to go back to the bank)
  • bring the suicide seat wrist bands, stamps, ink pads, crowd counters (currently in one of the cash boxes in my basement)
  • get some sort of boxes in which to collect ticket stubs
  • bring the deposit bags from the bank on Saturday (currently in my messenger bag)
  • pick up the unsold tickets from the brick 'n mortar places that are selling them, on Saturday afternoon
  • pick up the programs from the printer
Whee?

update

our league has three places we skate.

The first is a rink where we practice 95% of the time. (We contemplated having bouts there, but it's just too small of a place.)  The floor is wood, and I use my Voodoo and Chaser wheels and have a grand old time.

The second place is the sports complex not too far from where Roy works.  It's ice 9 months of the year but during the summer they put down sport court.  We have our summer bouts there.  They absolutely love having us and always give us first dibs on practice time (over the lacrosse teams), the practice space is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge and their rent for us having bouts there is dirt. fucking. cheap.  We'd have all our bouts there if we could.  The only real downside is that it's hotter than hell.

Our third place is the slick concrete-floored sports arena-y type place.  It's a fantastic place to have bouts (lots of seating, great concessions, etc), but it's not cheap.  We have our fall bouts there.  They seem to like us but haven't turned that liking into, oh, I dunno, reduced rent.

Anyway, the sports complex just opened for the season and we'll be skating there on Thursdays now.  We'll see how I need to adjust my wheels, if at all.

ok, let's not have that happen again

the Queen Mum (aka my mother, obviously) went into the hospital Thursday afternoon with some serious medical issues.  She's home now but not out of the woods yet, so I've been a bit preoccupied.  (Obviously didn't go to practice on Thursday.)
