back on skates

I realized a few days ago that with the exception of one time a few weeks ago, I haven't been on skates at practice since July.

Eep.

So last night I returned to practice in a non-contact way. (Amusing story - when I got the cast and stitches removed from my hand, the medical resident was going through all the stuff I can and can't do, the realm of contact sports came up.  She asked me what I played, I told her, she said "oh, I went to your last bout last season.  What's your derby name?" and called roller derby "*the* contact sport")  I got through the warm up with little problem, but realized that even with a band-aid over my healing scar, it was still getting sweaty (I'm not supposed to have it in "standing dirty water" for a week), so after about 20 minutes I took my skates off and watched.

sigh

so tonight begins Roy Underkill's bowling league.  While I am thrilled that he gets out of the house and socializes with other guys, I really wish it was on a night when I don't have practice.  True that it's not an issue now because I am not skating, but once I'm back on skates, it sucks having to miss scrimmage night.  (Especially since our season is starting earlier next year, I'll have to deal with four months of this, rather than the usual two.)

Maybe now that Maverick's older, I can try and track down some neighbor teenager who'd be willing to sit on our sofa and watch big-screen TV for a few hours every Thursday night.  Last season I'd ask my parents to do it, but it's kind of a drive for my Dad. (I will have to have him do it a least a few times, since I can't make attendance just going to two practices a week.)

hm

We lost the September 11 bout, but it was 76-70, and the lead switched back and forth many, many times, from what I was told.  I was in a tylenol + codeine haze, alas.

and sooooooo

September 11's bout will be interesting. We've had to borrow two players from the other home team because we are so short on people.  One of our best players doesn't have her attendance requirement and can't play; one of our returning players will be reassessing two days before the bout.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

scrimmage practice tonight

not skating; going to watch my team and prepare lineups for the 11th.  I have the lineups we ran back in July when we had our huge win, I'll start with those and work from there.  Whee.
