so (ARE YOU SENSING A THEME)

I skated yesterday.  My ankle was fine.  However......

Back in May, I started to develop a sore spot on the heel of my right foot.  It didn't look weird or anything, it just hurt if I put any sort of weight on it.  I ignored it for the better part of two months, and then was like OKAY THIS SUCKS I CAN'T WALK I NEED TO GET IT LOOKED AT.  So I went to my doctor who said that it looked like a wart was forming deep and that I should go to the dermatologist.  So I went to the dermatologist last week (and had to wait 45 minutes to see her LIKE I ALWAYS DO EVERY TIME I GO TO HER) and she determined it was a corn, not a wart, and grabbed a razor and scraped it out.

I'm supposed to keep a wart remover pad on it, but it's on my heel so it slides around and falls off, so I keep it secured with duct tape and I wore extra-squishy soled socks on purpose.  Anyway I was skating last night sprinting to keep up with someone and my heel was like OW OW OW OW OW FUCK THAT NOISE OW.  So at that point I stopped.

There's a little over a week until home team practices start again and I know we're going to start out 100% balls-to-the-wall, so I hope it gets better by then.

so

I know I said I wouldn't skate until home season started (8/2) in order to give my ankle time to recover, but MY ANKLE FEELS FINE AND I REALLY WANNA SKATE NOW DAMMIT....

Maybe I'll skate but just not do any sort of contact.  Is that an acceptable compromise?

so

My ankle is, like, at 99.99999% functionability (and yes, THAT IS A WORD).

Monday night was new skater practice, and we had them play Connect Four, which is this thing we do where four skaters go out on the track at once and just try to knock everyone else down.  If you go down or go out of bounds, you're out and someone takes your place.

The more accomplished skaters were laying out decent hits, but some of them were still "oh, I'm going to bump you lightly on the shoulder with my shoulder" and I just wanted to go out there and LAY THEM OUT FLAT.

(One skater had a TOTAL TEXTBOOK AWESOME booty to the thigh hit that swept both of that skater's feet out from her.  That was AWESOME.)

Our home practices start 8/2, and I plan on being off skates until then just to let my ankle fix itself up.  Whee!

ah crap

So we scrimmaged on Thursday to help out the A team (they are doing a doubleheader tomorrow for WFTDA standings) and I was jamming, and I just - fell.  My ankle was ow.  I tried getting up, but I was like "no, not gonna try.  I'm done."  They helped me over to the bench, got me ice, and I sat the rest of the time.

It got worse yesterday, so I started getting nervous and called my doctor's office.  They said to go to the ortho care guys, who did an X ray and determined that it wasn't broken (thank God), just sprained.

"So hey," the ortho doc said.  "We're doing a study about the effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on ankle sprains.  Wanna take part?"

"Sure," I said.  So, they took a blood sample (the chick who did it screwed up the first time [they need to use a larger diameter needle than, say, a blood donation, and she didn't get it fully in the vein and it ended up trickling down my arm] so they had a nurse take the sample through my wrist) and then a few minutes later they came back and injected either the PRP or saline into my ankle.

OH MY GOD.  It felt like he put the needle into my ankle and then decided to pull the needle OUT THROUGH MY SKIN IN WHICH WAS BURIED ALL AT ONCE.  I was actually yelling OW, OW, OW.  I have some surveys I will need to fill out, and PT to do, and they gave me a walking boot.

It feels a bazillion times better now, but I will, of course, treat it carefully.

fun and entertainment

last night I went to the refs' practice to help them out with stuff.  It was a lot of fun - they asked us to run packs with specific events happening (skaters chasing the jammers out of play, etc.).  I purposely didn't wear my mouthguard* for three jams to see if anyone noticed.

The best part, though, was when one of the refs called me on a major and I just screamed "FUCK YOU, REF!" to see what he'd do. (I got a major for insubordination, a lot of laughs, and a few "wow, Queenie!"s because I'm usually such a nice person.)

So yeah.  I think this was the last ref practice, which is kind of a bummer because that was mucho fun.

er, yah?

so between helping out with the Quarry skaters and helping out at refs' practice and helping the A team get ready for a double-header scrimmage in a week or two and going to board meetings and doing ticket stuff, BREAK? WHAT BREAK?

We had practice in the sauna (aka one of our old venues) on Sunday, and we played a bunch of games (Red Rover, Red Light Green Light, kickball) but we also did some pacelines.  It occurred to me, listening to the skaters behind me gasp and wheeze in the paceline when I was kind of like "oh, la de da" just how much my endurance has improved since I started.

Which brings me to my next hooray - next Monday is the fourth anniversary of my first derby practice. Yay!
